What does the Bible say about forgiveness for abortion?

Scripture never names abortion as the one sin beyond pardon. It names one sin as unforgivable: the settled, deliberate rejection of the Holy Spirit’s work — the heart that refuses to call sin sin and refuses the Saviour. Jesus said:

Truly I tell you, the sons of men will be forgiven all sins and blasphemies, as many as they utter. But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven; he is guilty of eternal sin. — Mark 3:28-29 (BSB)

That is not the cry of a broken heart. A person who grieves over sin and wants God’s forgiveness is already being drawn by the Spirit, not resisting Him. The very fact that you care is evidence of grace at work.

John writes to believers who had sinned:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. — 1 John 1:9 (BSB)

All unrighteousness. There is no category left out. David, who arranged a man’s death to cover his own sin, prayed for mercy in Psalm 51:1, asking God to blot out his transgressions according to His great compassion. And God answered. The Bible’s pattern is consistent: the sinner who turns is received.

Is abortion the unforgivable sin?

No. The unforgivable sin is not a single act; it is a final, hardened refusal of the Spirit’s conviction and the offer of Christ. A person who fears they have committed it is almost certainly not guilty of it, because that fear itself shows a tender conscience, not a seared one.

Abortion is grievous — it ends a human life made in God’s image. Scripture treats the unborn as known and formed by God:

For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. — Psalm 139:13-14 (BSB)

That is why abortion is sin. But the same Bible that calls it sin calls it forgivable. God does not grade sins into “pardonable” and “unpardonable” categories based on public shame. Every sin — including this one — was laid on Christ for those who trust Him.

What if I feel I cannot forgive myself?

Feelings are real, but they are not the measure of God’s forgiveness. God’s promise does not depend on how you feel on a given morning. He says:

As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us. — Psalm 103:12 (BSB)

And:

“Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool. — Isaiah 1:18 (BSB)

When God forgives, He does not keep a record for later use. The guilt is gone. What often remains is grief — a sorrow for what was lost — and that grief can be brought to God too. He is not impatient with tears.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted; He saves the contrite in spirit. — Psalm 34:18 (BSB)

If you have confessed this sin, you are not waiting for God to catch up with your repentance. He has already promised to forgive. The work now is to believe Him, and to let your conscience rest on His word rather than on your memory.

What is a short prayer for abortion forgiveness?

You do not need polished words. God hears the honest cry of a child. You might pray something like this:

“Father, I come to You in the name of Jesus. I confess the sin of abortion. I am sorry for what I have done and for what I failed to do. I receive Your forgiveness, bought by Christ on the cross. Cleanse me, restore me, and lead me in the next right step. Amen.”

If you would rather use Scripture, pray Psalm 51 slowly. It was written by a man who knew what it was to carry blood on his hands, and it ends in hope.

Confession is not a transaction that earns forgiveness; it is the open hand that receives what Christ has already purchased. For Roman Catholic readers, sacramental confession to a priest is the ordinary way this grace is received in the Church, and this site does not replace that. For all Christians, the promise is the same: God receives the one who comes.

What is the next honest step after confession?

Forgiveness is instant; healing and obedience are a path. Scripture connects repentance with times of refreshing:

Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away. — Acts 3:19 (BSB)

That path may include speaking with a pastor or a trusted mature believer who can pray with you and walk with you. It may include seeing a doctor or licensed counsellor if you are carrying depression, anxiety, or trauma. It may include asking forgiveness of others where that is possible and wise. It does not include punishing yourself — Christ has already borne the penalty.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. — Romans 8:1 (BSB)

If you have had an abortion, you are welcome in the family of God. You are not a second-class Christian. You are a sinner saved by grace, like every believer in the room.

How should I think about the child?

Scripture gives us less detail than we might wish about the eternal state of children who die. What it does give is the character of God — merciful, just, and good. Many Christians through history have taken comfort in David’s words after his infant son died:

But now that he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me. — 2 Samuel 12:23 (BSB)

David expected to see his child again. We can entrust the child to a God who is more loving and more just than we are, and who knows every life He has made. You do not have to carry the weight of deciding where that child is. You can place that child in God’s hands, again and again, and leave them there.

Where can I find peace that lasts?

Peace does not come from forgetting. It comes from being forgiven. It comes from knowing that the Judge of all the earth has declared you righteous in Christ, and that nothing in your past can separate you from His love.

If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities, then who, O Lord, could stand? But with You there is forgiveness, so that You may be feared. — Psalm 130:3-4 (BSB)

Come to Him. Read His promises in Scripture until they are louder than your memories. Pray honestly, even when the words are small. And find a local church where you can be known, taught, and loved — not as a project, but as a sister or brother in Christ.

Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. — Hebrews 4:16 (BSB)
